Gary Adams

Hi! My name is Gary Adams.  I’m an undergraduate student at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, PA.  Under the guidance of Rachel Hall  I am currently researching material on the relationship of mathematics to music.

Going into this project I had some formal training in music, including a music theory course, which I took at my high school.   I was interested in learning the various rules and guidelines, which govern how music is written and played.  Questions and ideas, which I am currently exploring in this project, were first formed out of this interest.

I first began listening to electronic music around this time as well.  And after a short-lived rock group I was in with several of my friends, two of the other members and myself formed a new electronic dance-oriented band.  We worked from demo songs that I had created using Garageband and a few other programs on my laptop.  We wrote several songs incorporating traditional pop elements and those of experimental electronica. An album and several shows, we disbanded and moved away to college.

I still continue to create both traditional songs and experimental sound-scapes. I will be contributing soundtrack elements to a film my friend is currently working on.  Below you will find several original pieces I have created on Garageband and iDrum.

Two tracks are part of the current project and there creation was triggered after I had begun looking into micro-timing in music.  In ambient 1 (groove)the bass line is unaltered and remains just as it was at the time of the recording.  In ambient 1 (non-groove) the notes in the bass line have been realigned to quarter note values.

In addition to creating this website, I will also be posting sound files and making contributions to Wikipedia under the user-name Sound of Numbers.
